As Christmas is fast approaching and those long awaited holidays are now in sight, you may be considering your family holiday. Travelling with children is very different to travelling without them, and can sometimes be very difficult. The key to having a really good time is to be prepared.

Here are some very practical tips that may just help make your holiday with your babies / toddlers / children run a little smoother.

  • Visit your doctor a few days before you go away. They may suggest a few items that you could take with you to help in the event of a family illness.
  • Check your destination to see what basic supplies will be available to you. Such as nappies and wipes.
  • If you are travelling overseas everyone needs a passport. Even a newborn will need their own. Remember this can take a few weeks to get organised.
  • Travel insurance is a good idea no matter where you are travelling.
  • Make a list of items you need to pack. Tick them of as you pack, so you don’t forget anything and tick them off when you pack to come home, so you do not leave anything behind.
  • Make an ID bracelet for each of your children. Include your name and contact number, laminate it and pop it on your child’s wrist or tie it onto their clothing.
  • Portable DVD player’s are a good investment. They are not only fantastic in the car but also useful if your destination does not have a DVD player.
  • Take along a scrapbook. Write down the day’s events. Ask your children to give you their thoughts and do drawings of what they saw. You can also stick in things like entry tickets and maps. You can add photos to it when you get back.
  • Remember to pack extra batteries or the battery charger for your cameras.
  • Check local water supplies for their safety for your baby or toddler. If you're in doubt use bottled water.
  • When mishaps happen treat your trip like an adventure. Annoyances, missteps and mishaps simply become small obstacles to overcome. Do you think Dora would let a two-hour delay get to her? Would Ben 10 get upset because the restaurant doesn’t have chicken fingers?
  • Leave at the right time. If your kids nap, use their schedules to your advantage. For example, if you’ve got a long car ride, see if you can’t leave an hour or so before their nap time. Most kids can entertain themselves for a little while, then they’ll have a sleep, and you have given yourself 3-5 hours bliss on the way to your destination.
