Parenting twins is no easy task, even for the super mum. There are two to bath, two to feed, two to burp, two to love, two to play with, two to smile at, and so on.
Twins are Individuals. Once you know you are having twins it is a good idea to start thinking about them as separate individuals so you can get to know them.
Share your feelings and thoughts. You might feel emotionally and physically drained by the changes happening to your body. It is important to share these feelings with your loved ones. This also helps them to start sharing the care.
Plan your Antenatal classes early. Twins often come early, plan to go to your antenatal classes a bit earlier than usual to make sure you can complete them.
Freeze some meals in advance for times when you need them after the birth
Get them in the same Routine. From the beginning try to get them into the same routine. Feed them at the same time, let them nap at the same time, and so on. This may not happen overnight but WILL be worth the hard work once they are in the same routine.
Stay calm and patient. Sometimes this may be easier said than done, but it will make the twins calmer, thus making the whole situation calmer. If you find yourself at your wits end, put the twins in their crib, or somewhere safe, and take 5 minutes. Take deep breaths, and relax, even if it is only for five minutes. Speak with your family and friends or seek professional help.
Try to enjoy every minute of the experience, because it is unique, and time will fly by quickly. You'll be amazed at how quickly the twins grow up.
Find a GREAT qualified babysitter. If you only go out once a month, you will appreciate the time away. Finding one that's qualified will give you peace of mind.
Accept all offers of help. If someone offers help, TAKE IT. There are so many people out there, that really do want to help and every little bit helps even if it is only taking the rubbish out.
Find a group such as, Mothers of Twins, and join. It is a great way to trade stories, get advice, be around other mothers who are dealing with situations just like you, or almost. You'll probably make life long friends for yourself, and twin playmates for your twins.
