Child and Baby Safety in the HomeYoung children love to explore and are not aware of potential dangers. That is why it is important for parents and carers to do a baby safety check before Bub arrives
There is a range of baby safety products available, be selective and choose safety products that suit your particular situation, are appropriate to your child’s age and are affordable.
Here are some baby safety points to consider:· Have emergency numbers near a telephone at all times
· Move all poisons out of your child’s reach, preferably in a child proof cupboard
· Cover, where possible, all sharp corners. For example if a coffee table has sharp corners put corner bumpers on the corners
· Cover all unused power points with outlet plugs
· Do not leave infants/toddlers in the care of other children or on their own
· Keep a first aid kit in the home and car
· Check all smoke alarms are working. Install smoke alarms in your child’s bedroom
· Keep keys in the lock of dead locked doors or nearby when you are in the house so you can get out quickly in case of a fire or emergency
· Install an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker in your fuse box which will cut off the electricity supply if there is a fault
· Unplug electrical appliances when not in use and wind cords up
· Keep cots away from windows
· Ensure all blind cords are out of reach of children. Preferable use ‘Cord Wind Ups’
· Ensure all small items that can cause choking are moved out of a child’s reach.
· Fit door-closers to doors that are likely to slam and jam fingers, and place finger jam protectors on door
· In a multi story house ensure that windows are fixed so that children cannot get out of them, and that all balconies have adequate barriers (vertical bars, not horizontal which are easily climbed)
· Keep all matches, lighters and candles out of reach of children
